Jeremy Redleaf, JUNEAU Sarah Palin parody movie director: Mr. Media Interview

Apparently there is a big national election campaign underway in the United States featuring an old man, a black man, a bald man and a woman who shoots moose.

Who knew?

Anyway, amidst all the noise for John McCain and Sarah Palin, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, Jeremy Redleaf has created a short, musical film parody called Juneau. It sounds just like that other movie of the same name with a different spelling. And instead of a pregnant teen named "Juno, " it revolves around a pregnant teen named "Bristol."

Harvey Frommer, REMEMBERING YANKEE STADIUM author: Mr. Media Interview

Book cover via AmazonThere are two memories of Yankee Stadium that I hold dear.

The first dates back to 1967. I was six years old and my grandfather took me to the House That Ruth Built for the first time to see my idol, Mickey Mantle. There are two things I remember about that night: The Mick hit a home run but I was mostly scared to death being way up high in the upper deck.

My second memory is of the last time I was at the stadium, June 16, 1997. My wife ordered tickets for us to see the first ever interleague game between the Yankees and their crosstown rival, the Mets. It was the first game that would ever count between the two teams. We flew up from Florida just for the game.

By then, I was more a Mets fan than a Yankees fan and, even more, a Tampa Bay Rays fan. It was as electric an atmosphere as I could imagine any World Series game might offer.

But my recollections are a drop in the bucket compared with the ones collected by Harvey Frommer in his new coffee table book, Remembering Yankee Stadium. It is packed not just with oral histories collected from some of the greatest Yankees players, managers, sports writers and fans, but is also filled with awesome photos from decades of historic moments.

Clay Bennett, CHATTANOOGA TIMES FREE PRESS editorial cartoonist: Mr. Media Interview

Of the nine books I’ve written, it just occurred to me that the first and last have Pulitzer Prize connections—not for my work, unfortunately, but still…

The last was Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, a biography of the American master artist and writer, which featured an introduction by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Michael Chabon.

And my first book, Stadium For Rent, features dozens of editorial cartoons drawn by future Pulitzer Prize winning artist Clay Bennett.

Back then, Bennett was poking fun at local issues and political figures for the St. Petersburg Times. I’ve always regarded his style as sneaky—the clean lines and bold images let him club you over the head with his message while you’re still chuckling.

Bennett left the Times for the Christian Science Monitor, where he ultimately won his Pulitzer. Today, he’s with the Chattanooga Times Free Press, of all places, and we’ll certainly talk about that, I’m sure.

Rabbi Bob Alper, WHAT ARE YOU... A COMEDIAN? rabbi turned standup comedian: Mr. Media Interview

My wife and I love taking vacations in Maine and Vermont. That’s not unusual for Floridians, of course. But it was reading the local paper in Manchester Center, Vermont, probably a decade ago, that I first heard of my next guest.

The story was about a performance by a rabbi-turned-standup comedian named Bob Alper.

I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a Jewish temple but I have. They’re not naturally funny places. But Rabbi Bob Alper is a naturally funny guy.

We became friends over the years, visiting and breaking bread in Vermont and in Florida. My family and I have seen him perform numerous times and even manned his book sale table once.

He’s just released the first DVD of his act, titled What Are You… A Comedian? so I’m using it as an excuse to feature my friend on today’s show.

Surgeon General's Warning: Hollywood is Dangerous to Your Health! (TV Guide)

Here's something I bet you didn't know: Becoming a TV star will stunt your growth!

It's true, it's true. And here's how I know: the two latest issues of TV Guide magazine.

I was a little suspicious last week when the "Fall Preview" issue (September 8) featured the leading men of five new shows—Rufus Sewell ("Eleventh Hour"), Simon Baker ("The Mentalist"); Christian Slater ("My Own Worst Enemy"), Joshua Jackson ("Fringe"), and Jason O'Mara ("Life On Mars")—were all eye-to-eye on the cover.

But when the latest issue—"Returning Favorites" (Sept. 15)—arrived today, lo and behold, all the women on that cover were also eye-to-eye! That's right, Brooke Shields ("Lipstick Jungle") and Julia Louis-Dreyfus ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") are the same height! And so are Kate Walsh ("Private Practice") and Emily Deschanel ("Bones")!

But wait! In an interior photo, Deschanel towers over Louis-Dreyfus!

More food for thought: Ryan Seacrest ("America Idol"), Jeff Probst ("Survivor") and Howie Mandel ("Deal or No Deal") are te same height in a group photo as Heidi Klum ("Project Runway")!

(Apparently the cast of "ER" must get its water supply shipped in from the Midwest, because its cast photos shows actors of a variety of heights.)

Is it Photoshop, or something more sinister? Is it a job for "House" or Columbo"?

ZITS and BABY BLUES cartoonists Jerry Scott, Jim Borgman, Rick Kirkman: Mr. Media Interview

Not too surprisingly, when my daughter Rachel was born, it didn’t take long for me to see the humor in the “Baby Blues” comic strip by Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott.

It was so relatable!

And when Rachel hit 6 or 7, she started reading it herself and thought it was hysterical. She was sooo cute then!

RACHEL: DAAAAAAAD!

What? You’re interrupting my introduction!

RACHEL: Yeah, well, you’re embarrassing me! AGAIN!

Here’s a plotline I’ve never seen in a comic strip: Dad invites daughter to co-host his international, hit podcast and all she does is whine!

RACHEL: DAAAAAAAD!

What now?

RACHEL: You’re hardly an international hit! I don’t even think Mrs. Logan knows about this show and she knows everything about us!

Thanks kid. Do you mind if I continue?

RACHEL: If you must… Actually, let me finish, okay?

WHAT-evah.

RACHEL: My Dad’s right about one thing – I really do like “Baby Blues.” And one of my other favorite strips is “Zits, ” which I found out is written by the same man who writes “Baby Blues, ” Jerry Scott. He and artist Jim Borgman produce the daily adventures of Jeremy, his parents, and Jeremy’s best friends Hector and Pierce.

We’re really excited to welcome to Mr. Media all three creators of these two strips – artists Rick Kirkman and Jim Borgman and writer Jerry Scott.

Norman Pardo, OJ'S COURT, OJ Simpson's promoter: Mr. Media Interview

Everybody has an opinion on O.J. Simpson. He’s this, he’s that – one thing we can all agree upon is that his life is certainly not a dull one.

For the last seven years, Norman Pardo has been OJ’s promoter, sitting side by side with him as he rode in parades, cut grand-opening ribbons, headlined at nightclubs, appeared on live radio shows and signed sports memorabilia in cities throughout America.

Pardo also logged hundreds of hours in planes, limos, hotel rooms, bars and restaurants with OJ. And during each leg of their tours, he had his video camera trained on OJ, capturing more than 70 hours of documentary footage – most all of which has never been seen.

On Monday, September 8, OJ Simpson will stand trial is Las Vegas on kidnapping and armed robbery charges. That evening, at 9 p.m. EST, Norman Pardo will launch “OJ’s Court, ” a special series of programs heard exclusively on BlogTalkRadio.com, that will allow armchair jurors to weigh in on each day’s proceedings. At the end of the trial, online jurors will be asked to render a final verdict in the case.

I was going to find some juicy celebrity quote in the September issue of GQ. But after flipping through the first 200 pages and still stuck in the midst of nothing but ads—the "Style Issue" is 396 pages—I threw in the Giorgio Armani towel. Better luck next month, laddies.

Who knew this was going to be such an interesting week for cartooning and comic strip news?

Not me. And not when I invited Alan Gardner to be my guest today.

Alan is the editor of the wildly popular web site DailyCartoonist.com, which is solely dedicated to news of daily comic strips and cartoons.
